Tyler Responds to Mountain Dew Controversy

As you may already know, on Wednesday Tyler’s 3rd Mountain Dew commercial was pulled from TV and taken down from the Odd Future Youtube page after being called, “arguably the most racist ad in history“. The ad which saw Felica The Goat in a line-up with 5 other people, who have been described as “Not just regular black people, but the kinds of ratchety negroes you might find in the middle of any hip-hop minstrel show:  Gold teeth, “mean mugging,” sun glasses wearing, white-t sportin, hard core n*ggaz ready to get into some ol gangsta sh*t.” by Dr. Boyce Watkins, the man who first brought the idea of the ad being racist to the forefront, caused much controversy after having these accusations put against it. It seems that his position on the advert may have changed slighty though, as on Thursday morning he took to Twitter to post this statement:

Boyce Watkins ?@drboycewatkins1 13h

@fucktyler – studied your music, I have an altered perspective. Still could do without the ad,but I think you were well-intended. #respect

Tyler has kept quiet about the whole situation, but recently he and Odd Future manager Christian Clancy spoke to Billboard.com to discuss what happened. Check out the interview in the link below.

What a way to stand up for black men everywhere by getting a commerical made by a young black male taken off tv. Way to go!

Keep doing what you do, Tyler.

Absolute bullshit. People need to understand that the only reason there were a ton of black people in that line up is that those are Tyler’s friends, and most of his friends happen to be black. Calling that commercial racist is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard of
