UEFA Euro 2012 (Poland-Ukraine 2012)

Posted Image

The 2012 edition of the Euro 2012 will be played in Poland and Ukraine starting June 8th, this will be the last European Championship in this format, since France 2016 will be played in a 24-team format.
The tournament will be played in 8 stadiums (4 in Ukraine and 4 in Poland), similar to the 2000 tournament, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands.
The opening match and cerimony will be held at Poland's National Stadium (50 000 seats) in Warsaw, the final and closing cerimony will be held in Ukraine's Olympic Stadium (60 000 seats) in Kiev, home of Dynamo Kiev.

The Referees:

Just a quick reference to the referees, more specifically Howard Webb (ENG) and Wolfgang Stark (GER), probably the two best referee's of the moment and Pedro Proença (POR) and Damir Skomina (SLO), the first one is probably one of the three worst portuguese referees I have memory of, and the latter who I have followed a few games in the last three years and I must say I have nothing good to say about, especially the 2010 UEFA Europa League 1/8 Final between Benfica and Marseille, with errors to both sides, in what was described by the international media as a disaster.

We are exactly one month away from the start of this year's Euro, so I tought it was worth having a separate thread to discuss it and leave the Football thread for regular season discussion, transfers, etc... If you guys think it's not worth it, then I'll ask to get it merged.

Spain - Arguably the strongest team in Europe, borrows its style of play heavily from Barcelona (the tic-tac or tiki-taka style), also defending champions and world champions, I'd say there's a good chance they win this year, though their style of play, just like Barcelona is already more than studied by their opponents, so it starts to be less of a threat, still it's nothing to play with.
They will certainly (as certain as you can be in football obviously) be in the knockout.

The Netherlands - A team running after a deserved title that seems to be escaping for the last 10-12 years (Euro 2000), 2012 WC Final may have been a wake up call for them, a very close call, no pun intended.

Germany - I'd say the second strongest team in Europe, also runs after a title that got away in 2006 and 2010 (3rd place WC) and 2008 (2nd place EC). A very equilibrated team.

Second tier of possible winners: Italy, France, England and Portugal
My idea is even though this is not their strongest teams in the last 10 years, they are still good candidates at taking the trophy home this year, if they get past Spain/Germany & Netherlands/eachother in the group phase, they will be with a high moral in the knockout phase. They all suffer from the same problem, on the rebound of golden generations, playing mediocre football, even though they have way above average squads.

I have high hopes for Portugal as always, we got in the worst group possible, but by far the most exciting one, It'll be hard to even make it to the quarter final, but it may be possible, I will never forget my first european championship, I was 9, portugal was in group A (?) with England, Germany and Romania, who at the time had a very good squad with the likes of Bogdan Stelea, Hagi, Popescu and a young Chivu on the rise... I remember it like it was just yesterday, the first match was against England, Portugal was behing by 2-0 early on the game, the Figo scored a marvellous goal from outside the area and Portugal turned the result on the beggining of the second half, I'll never forget, it was a monday... Shit it was such an hard group, we then won 1-0 vs. romania on a saturday or sunday afternoon, with a costinha goal after a free kick or a corner kick in the last minutes, Fernando Couto took his shorts off in the celebrations, LMAO, it was another moment I won't forget... the final game I don't remember much, I do remember we won 3-0 and Sergio Conceição made an hat trick, but I don't remember clearly any of the goals... After that we beat Turkey 2-0 with two Nuno Gomes' goals and lost 2-1 to France with a penalty in the second half of golden goal extra time.
Moral of the story, we did it in 2000 we can do it this year.

LOL where are you from?I know it's in the UK or Ireland....

Anyway most probalby yeah, Germany, Holland or Spain will win.
I'm also kind of intrigued to what Poland and especially Ukraine can do, Host normally have good performances, and it would be a surprise to see either France or England out on the group stage...

nice organization crash!

im going for england.

Thanks, I'll be posting detailed information on the teams as soon as final squads are announced (deadline is May 29th). Be sure to check back...

We have a very though group it'll be hard to get past Germany and Holland, but well we have to hope...

England and France are the two main candidates to win group D, England will have to fight hard for the first place though, so they can avoid Spain at all costs...

I think the winner will come out of the group of death. Germany has a young team and they played very well during the last world cup. Having an Italian background i hope they win but i cant see that happening. There are always the upsets every year just like Turkey, Russia and Croatia a couple years back

Oh Ibra is far from his best football, don't get me wrong he's doing wonderful matches since he moved to milan, but it's not enough to compensate for the whole team... Englands team is more solid, I do hope though that Olsson (the left back one, I never know which one is each) makes a good tournament, he's the left back that benfica needs next season :D

England have prepared horribly for this tournament so they cant possibly win it, the FA fucked around too much again.

Spain or Germany will win it.

I also propose us, the Republic of Ireland, to cause a few upsets. We certainly don't have the best players by a longshot, but we're one of the strongest teams, if you get me. The team has neen virtually unchanged and playing the same system under Trapattoni for the last 3 or so years and have been able to grind out results when it matters. You must remember how Greece won just by playing rigid football and were highly organised by Otto Reihagel (however its fucking spelled), the similarities are uncanny, who knows.

Oh I remember ok, fucking greeks came to our land and fucked our women... Well they didn't but they took our trophy, they parked the motherfucking bus in front their goal and scored on a transition... Fucking greek motherfuckers :,(

In all seriousness, I do agree with you that Ireland may be a pleasent surprise, trapattoni is a very good coach/manager I miss him in Benfica, the old fox got Benfica playing the best football they had played in ten years... Besides that Ireland has a good squad.

Ireland to get battered by Italy, Spain and Croatia.

England to get battered by the frog cunts.

Germany to win it all, and hopefully Spain crash and burn.

I totally forgot to put the ball in the OP, thanks mayne, I'll put it there...

Best ball = the jabulani

Worst ball = Fevernova and Europass (The Europass is like the worst thing a goalkeeper can ask for that shit is impossible to catch and gets weird trajectories)

Haven't tried a Jabulani, btu from what I've heard it kinda does too, but not nearly as much as the Europass, and I kinda doubt you can go any worse than the Europass with an official ball...

Many say that the new European Champion will come out of Group B, the death group, which counts with three former European Champions and the 2004 finalist and 2000 semi-finalist, most appoint Germany or the Netherlands as the winners, but the truth is Portugal and Denmark are sure to cause a ruckus and certainly won't go down without a fight. Portugal, combining a creative play style supported by midfielders like Ronaldo, Nani and Moutinho and the cynical approach of a team that has a solid defense which compensates for the occasional lack of efficacy of the attack, Portugal aims just at getting in the knockout stage, but if they do, it's more than possible that Portugal might replace Germany or the Netherlands in the final.

The Stars

Posted Image
Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

In my opinion the second greatest player in the world today (second only to the magical Messi) Need a International title that first got away in 2004, and then again in 2006. No doubt the star of the team, and a serious candidate to Player of the Tournament.

Posted Image
Nani (Manchester United)

A great winger who sometimes seems to live on the shade of Cristiano Ronaldo on the national team, a marvelous player who can play on either side of the attack. Had another consistent season this year, as he has had for the past 5 years on United.

Be on the lookout for:

Posted Image
Nélson Oliveira (Benfica)

A young (20 years old) striker who plays for Benfica, commonly called the future national team's attack. With a play style similar of Wayne Rooney and David Villa, always moving and very confortable creating plays, good passing skils, good dribbling and a sense for looking for oppurtunities to strike at goal. He spent the first half of the season on the shade of Cardozo and Rodrigo but appeared on th second half of the season as a viable option, his potential was recently recognized with the interest of Barcelona on signing him in the near future. I believe he won't have as many chances as he should in this Euro, but when he does be on the lookout for a possible future world class striker.

Surprises:

The inclusion of Miguel Lopes, Custódio and Rúben Micael.
The exclusion of Quim instead of Eduardo and Hugo Viana (included later, on May 23rd due to Carlos Martins' Injury) instead of Rúben Micael.
