In this thread we can help aid people new to producing, and each other. Basically just a production discussion forum.

Topics can range from:
Programs, Vst's, Midi Controllers, Samples, Theory... All that fun shit.

This is 'NOT' for posting your own personal tracks. Unless of course it's relevant to the subject.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Helpful websites:

http://samples.kb6.de/downloads.php

kb6 is a sample site run by one single guy. All the smaller packs are free for download, but for the larger ones you have to donate (and it's well worth it).
After donating a price (of your choice) you have unlimited samples at your disposal. It would be cool if you donated a little more then just $1 seeing as how it's just 1 person trying to make a living, but whatever works for your budget.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.gersic.co...ugins/index.php

Gersic... Where to begin.
This is basically VST heaven. Everything on here is freeware. The site is packed with thousands of Vst's made by every day programmers who just want to share what they've done.
Some of these are whack, but if you can steer clear of the not so good ones there are some incredible ones.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.reaper.fm/download.php

Reaper.
For anyone just getting started into music, but who also has no program to get started with.
It's $40 to buy, but you can easily get it for free. It's basically just an option they give you right from the start. They figure people are going to crack it anyways, why not just give it to them. $40 isn't much, so if you want to be legit... Go for it.
It's much like other programs, and in time you'll have everything figured out.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://vespers.ca/store/
http://www.youtube.com/user/DJVespers

There are many people online willing to teach. People who will make video tutorials, or just try and help out in a thread. Like I am here.
DjVespers is an Ableton Live certified trainer. He tackles a little more advanced techniques, but mainly it's to help you with mastering your tracks.
Now, Vespers makes "Glitch hop", so there's some pretty whack stuff in these tutorials, but it's all gold nonetheless.
On the store page to the right there's a sign up to download area. Once you type in your email and submit it he will send you a free ebook on ableton live "pro secrets".
And this just has.... Everything.
So as much as teaching yourself works, there's usually a tutorial out there, or someone willing to help you on what you're trying to do.

If you have any suggestions or ways to improve this thread please tell me. If you want to share some sites as well send me them and I'll put them in the Original post and give you the credit for it. So everybody can see.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.asio4all.com/

I can't believe I haven't mentioned this yet. Asio is a must for studio work. To put it really simply: This will improve the quality of everything.
Basically an audio interface, but rather me trying to explain what it is and making a fool of myself, I'd rather just leave it at that.

I honestly never use pad presets, but on gersic they have an "amphetamine" vst which might tickle your fancy.

I also did a search, but I can't guarantee any of these will be what your looking for.

bumping this because I think there should be a sub-board for producing/ OFT user's music. I need somewhere to talk about producing and learn.

This is a cool thread.

I just got Reason 5 and have been fucking around with that. Before that was some dumb shit in FL Studio and getting my foot in the door with Ableton. I'm going to have an Akai LPD8 and M-Box audio interface this summer, so i'm prepping for all that. I was thinking about sequencing in Ableton LIVE or Reason 5 and mixing in Pro Tools.

I'll post shit if i get it done.

gearslutz.com is the obvious site. you have to take everything in that site with a grain of salt, though. there is a lot of pretentious motherfuckers just flexxing about gear and stroking their e-peen about which DAW is superior. There's things to gain from it, but testing things yourself is better than taking some fuckhole off a forums word for it. the Low-End Theory, Hip-Hop, and Newb boards are all great for lurking.

thanks for the VST and sample links.

A sub section would be cool, but I don't see an easy way of them fitting it in without it getting a little confusing.
Right now I've got...
Reason, Ableton, Komplete 7, Rokit Krk's, Roland midi keyboard, korg nano key, and a Lpd 8.
My older brother bought komplete and reason, ableton is cracked, and everything else I bought.
I don't DJ, or rap. Just pure production. Mainly piano melodies + strings and a nice drum beat underneath.
Used to fuck around with dubstep, but I'm rreeaally sick of that shit. Can't stand it anymore. So now it's just whatever I can make that sounds nice.
I don't often share my music with others.

What kind of shit are you doing?

going to start focusing on hip hop instrumentals and shit, but probably just electronic or ambient stuff i want that would compliment a solo thing i'm conceiving. I'm really still just learning DAWs and everything. Haven't found my place in one yet, but Reason is looking good

I've been using ableton for almost 3 years now, and I'm extremely comfortable with it, but I guess it would be the same with anything.
Any particular kind of hiphop instrumental? The sort of... orchestra sample based thing that a lot of people do? Or completely your own thing?

not anything like that. I kind of make it my own thing. i'm influenced a lot by Danger Mouse and Kanye West when it comes to producing hip hop but nowhere near as much sample-orientated. very drum centric

what helped you learn Ableton? i have a feelign that is what I'm going to gravitate towards once I get my akai lpd8

Love danger mouse and Kanye. Although with Kanye it's just his dark fantasy stuff, and monster for me.

Well the biggest help with ableton was my older brother, I also went to an Ableton workshop hosted by one of my favorite musicians (ill gates), but besides that I guess it's just what you make of stuff. After years of sticking with a single program you're going to figure things out.

thanks for that first link brah brah mucho lovero

I use samples in nearly all of my beats right now. Mostly because I'm not good at creating melodies on a computer, and I don't have a MIDI controller. Something about a real piano just makes it so much easier to create.

At the moment I'm running ableton at the moment with an m-audio oxygen 25, a m-audio keystation and a korg nanokontrol. Then I'm usuing the arturia spark to create all my beats then got some sample packs for anything else i need.

Not that I know of. It's $40. Don't crack reaper because if you read my original post on it you should know that it's a pointless thing to do.

What are your thoughts on sampling?

I'm sort of love/hate on it.

On one hand some of my favorite beat makers are people like Madlib, and Doom. Who basically do nothing but sample. And I like what they come up with. But I don't like seeing kids my age loop some strings over and over with some loud drums bumping in the back. I just think it's sort of a drain on creativity.
I'm also highly against stealing, or copying. So when I see my Facebook friends post links to their soundclouds and all they've done is looped someone elses song, and are calling it theirs... It... Tempers me.

I personally never do it. All the melodies I create are my own inventions and I love that. I don't have to give props to anyone else, and at the end of the day I can feel good about myself. But some people can make it work. So if you feel you can do the original songs justice then by all means.

I could keep going since I have lots of thoughts on sampling, but I figure this is already too much.

Does anyone know a good website to download sound bites or samples from tv shows, cartoons, movies, etc.? I like to include things like that in my instrumentals but it's hard to find sites that have a good selection for free.

Does anyone know a good website to download sound bites or samples from tv shows, cartoons, movies, etc.? I like to include things like that in my instrumentals but it's hard to find sites that have a good selection for free.

No idea of a site that offers this, but an easy way to do it would be to copy the url from a youtube video of what you want (if available), and use http://www.flv2mp3.com/ to download it. Then just edit it to only the part you want if it's long.
Not exactly sure of what you're asking, but if you just want to take quotes from things like movies and shows then yeah this will work.
