This Week's Album
Magna Carta Holy Grail - Jay-Z
Magna Carta Holy Grail is the twelfth studio album from Jay-Z which was only announced less than a month ago after a commercial during the fifth game of the 2013 NBA Finals. Details would later surface that the album would be released for free on certain Samsung devices first(Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4,and Galaxy Note II) using an app. Controversy was met when we learned that because of this, the album would go platinum automatically. After all the hype from the commercials, did Jay-Z make any "new rules?" Let's find out.
No. He didn't make any new rules. Jay-Z hyped this album up to be something it wasn't. It's not that its a bad album, it's just not that great, or not as great as Jay-Z and others thought. Let's focus on some positives though. The production throughout is really good. Most of it was done by Timbaland and J-Roc, but there was also some production from Pharrell Williams, Boi-1da, Mike Will Made It, Hit-Boy, Mike Dean, The-Dream, Swizz Beats. So, you got an all star team of producers right here, and Jay-Z uses them pretty well. There's also some great features from Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean, and a decent one from Beyonce.
After that, well, there's not that many positives. Jay-Z has always been a guy who's kinda hit and miss to me and he's still hit and miss to me. He can go from being really good (like on "Heaven," besides the random REM lyrical sample) to just straight up cringe ("Somewhere in America" "Twerk Miley, twerk" ). Also, Jay-Z could use some more interesting subject matter, because most of the songs on here are about how much money he has, how awesome that he got with Beyonce, and how awesome he is. Now, it's okay to brag about yourself in rap, but if you're gonna do it, at least be either be funny or interesting, which Jay-Z isn't on this album. Oh, and Rick Ross had a terrible feature.
To conclude, this album feels rushed. Jay-Z doesn't sound interested and it seems like Samsung came up to him and said "hey Jay-Z, think you can make an album in a couple of weeks and we'll give you a bunch of money to put it on our devices?" Jay-Z needs to retire soon or find some inspiration, because there isn't any on this album.
