This Week's Album
Unknown Death 2002 - Yung Lean
Unknown Death 2002 is the first mixtape from 16 year old Swedish rapper Yung Lean. After dropping the video for "Ginseng Strip 2002," Lean started to gain some hype around the internet. He kept the hype going releasing a few more songs, a few more videos, and announcing the said mixtape we're reviewing today. Did this mixtape make me #emotional in a good way or #emotional in a bad way? Let's find out... but first, check out the reviews Costa and Foxy did:
So yeah, I've been excited for this mixtape since I heard about it a few months back and I'm not disappointed. For someone so young, this is a really solid mixtape, especially the production. Oh lord the production. The production's done by a multitude of people including Sadboys members Yung Gud ("Nitevision," "Gatorade," "Princess Daisy") and Yung Sherman ("Welcome 2 Unknown Death", "Lightsaber // Saviour," "Lemonade"), Gregar (who you may remember from "5th Element" and did "Oceans 2001" on the album), Suicideyear ("Hurt"), White Armor ("Emails," "Deathstar // Getting Benjamins," "Heal You // Bladerunner"), and Friendzone ("Solarflare") and it's some of the best original production I've heard on a mixtape in a while. There's a lot of variety from boom-bap old school type beats on "Princess Daisy" to high energy beats on "Solarflare" or "Gatorade" to cloud rap type beats on "Lightsaber // Saviour." For some relatively young guys, the production on here is top notch and they'll definitely have a bright and emotional future.
Now onto Lean himself, you either love or hate his rapping style, it's as simple as that. Personally, I love it. I saw this on reddit somewhere, he's kind of like a mixture of Lil B and Lil Ugly Mane. He's got some amazing production and ridiculous lines like Ugly Mane (and sometimes Lil B.) and the cult fanbase of Lil B. He's started a small revolution of Sadboys around the world. But sometimes, Lean doesn't always work well as a rapper, with the production saving him in some parts, like on "Emails" or "Heal You // Bladerunner." However, it's not enough to ruin the entire tape for me, or even those songs because I'm still vibing with them.
Overall, I really enjoyed this tape. A lot of it is easy to vibe and chill out to and for someone relatively new in the game, this is a very impressive first effort, and I can't wait to see what Lean and the Sadboys crew does next. Especially Yung Gud, dude is a master of production and he's in the running for Best New Producer 2013 for me.
I give it 4 Arizona Iced Teas out of 5.
